As a prelude to one of the new things I’m venturing into, I’d like to share a small project I’m currently doing. Initially, I had planned on posting weekly but, with quite a few things pressing on my time, it’s just not feasible yet.
Still a bit rusty on the whole blogging thing — clearing out cobwebs and adjusting my mindset — but I’m sure I’ll soon get the hang of it again.
I used to have fun exploring products, testing them out, then blogging about them. So when I started my new regimen, I thought it would be fun to document the progress and share it here. It isn’t some small change so I’m sort of expecting a real shift on several fronts, but mainly health and skin.
I’ve started on supplements — the sort that serves as your multi-vits and energy boosters plus, er, anti-ageing. Alas, I have to accept that I can no longer keep a lifestyle not suited to my age. Oh, wait. I’m actually trying to get back the sort of energy I had when I was younger so I can do more with the time I have in a day.
Have you noticed how, on some days, there isn’t enough time for things you want to get done? Either that, or you’d over-extend yourself to a point you might break? Well, that’s how life works, it seems. You age, you seem to run out of energy more quickly, you don’t sleep well or enough, but the work you need to do, things you need to manage, these increase — with only time remaining constant.
So you try to find a way to make everything fit together. But sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves in the process. This is why when the opportunity came, I knew it was no coincidence. It was time that I invested in myself so I welcomed the new regimen.
DAY 1 • 22 March
I’ve switched to a new set of products: skincare, body care, hair care, and yes, I’m even using a new tube of toothpaste.
I have to admit that I’ve encountered little problem with my skin, however, I was complaining about a rough patch of skin on both areas of my cheekbones. One theory is that it’s because of a combination of the change in weather and water then there’s that bit about my linen.
Before the switch, I’ve been an avid Neutrogena user and have been using their products (facial wash, facial scrub, and toner) for a good few years. For day and night moisturisers, I’ve been using Olay Total Effects and Olay Regenerist, respectively.
Now, I switched to Nu Skin’s Tri-Phasic White Cleanser (facial wash) and Tri-Phasic White Toner (toner) and for regular exfoliating, I use Nu Skin Exfoliant Scrub. For moisturisers, I use the Nu Skin Moisture Restore Day Protective Lotion for normal, non-makeup requiring days and would alternate with Nu Skin Advanced Tinted Moisturiser in beige; night cream now is Nu Skin Night Supply Nourishing Cream.
DAY 2 • 23 March
Not that I’m looking to see daily results, I’m just curious if I’d see how the changes will play out. Oh yea, I’m planning on a 30-day period for this “documentary” but will see how this project will turn out.
Apart from the skincare switch, I’ve also started taking dietary supplements: ageLOC Y-Span and LifePak. Former is an anti-ageing supplement; latter, a nutritional supplement. On the why I’ve decided to take these, it’s simply because I hope to create a more active lifestyle, which means I’d need more energy. Was never the type who’d take multi-vits but would punish my body with long nights (some times skipping sleep even) and wouldn’t eat properly. Plus the fact that I haven’t been successful in getting rid of my smoking habit (don’t judge!).
I’ve been trying to gain weight for a good decade now but like I mentioned, my habits don’t really work well with my weight goals, haha. So I figured I really need to do something about it. Baby steps!
DAY 3 • 24 March
With the sort of climate we have, it’s quite normal that I’d take 2 showers daily. One when I wake up and the other before I go to sleep. But on extra hot days, I’d prolly throw in a shower or two, depending on how busy my day is. That’s why it was a no brainer for me to stock up on bath products. I’m not overly particular about this, save that the product won’t leave residues, or would make my skin feel oily (believe me I’ve tried one product that did that) or dry (obviously). I decided to take the Liquid Body Bar (smells heavenly btw!) and the Body Bar (yes, I have a thing for bar soaps!) for a test run. And a body scrub, Liquid Body Lufra — especially great since I can’t seem to find a product which really sticks, you know? Have been using an old time fave St Ive’s Exfoliating Body Wash in Soothing Apricot before the switch
I know, I know. You can’t really see the effects of these in the photos. But I had to share! Sometimes, a good shower can actually boost your mood and improve how you deal with the rest of your day or relax you enough to get a good night’s sleep.
DAY 4 • 25 March
As you can prolly tell, I haven’t been wearing makeup. I work from home, you see. I would only take business trips if it’s truly necessary since most of the work I do, I can do it remotely. So I don’t really dress up much anymore. And this reminds me of all the style-slash-OOTD and FOTD posts I used to do when I had StyleManila.com. That’s what life’s like. All things change. You’d be surprised with the amount of change you’d go through in a year. Who you are today isn’t the same you of last year. Amazing, isn’t it?
Since the change happens gradually, we’d sometimes fail to notice — unless we really pause and think about it. I do find it great whenever I’d get around to thinking about it. Have been teaching myself to embrace the change and look forward to that person I’m still becoming. I happen to think that that’s a pretty exciting prospect.
DAY 5 • 26 March
Oh yea, I mentioned I’m using a new tube of toothpaste — it’s AP24 Whitening Fluoride Toothpaste. Used to use Sensodyne because I’ve got a bit of a sensitive set of teeth. And if you know me — and I mean, really know me — I’m a bit obsessive about my teeth. I developed a complex because I got teased with having buck teeth growing up. The ‘rents helped remedy that by getting it fixed. My teeth was too “chalky” to take on braces so I had to deal with retractable retainers — this was during the time when it was this thing you have to wear all the time so you have this wire across your teeth while you manage your saliva glands that’s working overtime. Gah. Now, I’d only wear the rubbery trainers overnight to manage the teeth “alignment” (yes, I still wear one even though I’m old!)
To illustrate how anal I can get about this: In one brushing session, I’d brush my teeth twice (yes, minimum 3 mins each time); before and after I floss, haha.
On the new tube, doesn’t hurt that it promises to whiten and brighten my teeth. Since I’m writing this on the 10th day, I have to say that I’m seeing some improvements in some of my molars (you can’t see them in the photos) — the discolouration near the gum line of two molars I can easily see are dulling. I’m actually impressed! All I can think of was “so that’s why this toothpaste is selling like hotcakes.”
DAY 6 • 27 March
Fresh out of the shower, haha. I have to say that one of the other things that I can get obsessive about is my hair. I’m a little particular about what product I use on it, or which hairdresser can touch my hair. Altho I do get those cheap haircuts like earlier today, for instance. It’s just for a trim and got him to fix my layers. I would only go to this hairdresser because I know he’s handled my hair before (yes, talk about trust issues, haha). Funny, I only decided to get a haircut because when I saw all photos of the past 10 days and noticed how dry the ends look and the layer length looked awkward. I have long hair, with the longest end (of the layers) reaching down to the waist. That’s the longest I’ve kept it. Now, it’s back to just below the middle of my back. Yea, still long tho, haha.
Anyway, I’m trying out Epoch Ava Puhi Moni Shampoo and Light Conditioner. I have to admit I’m not a big fan of 2-in-1 products esp now that I’ve been using semi-pro products — been using Vidal Sassoon Premium Colour Care Shampoo and Conditioner for the past couple of years. But the times I’ve used the new shampoo/conditioner, it’s been decent. Road testing it more this weekend as I hit the beach. It’s glorious to pack since it’s just one decently sized bottle! More room for other products in my vanity bag, haha.
And a little trivia: I don’t brush my hair. I just run my fingers through it. Yes, even when my hair is this long, haha.
DAY 7 • 28 March
By the end of the 7th day, the stress of getting a photo taken daily has proven to be a bit challenging, haha. Well, I do have to say that that day was packed with stuff to do, and places to be. On top of that, I had to deal with Manila streets and summer heat. Plus I had needed to multi-task, i.e. be on the phone while checking inventory, AND troubleshooting a printer I just bought — which ended up being a lemon btw and needed replacing — and so on. The day offered not just one issue to tackle but several.
This explains the photo, haha. I had barely any time to take a photo. As you can see, I was still wearing my makeup. And it was getting late. And I still wasn’t finished with my work. So, I was a little stressed out (thinking about needing to go out the next day — and extra early, too!) and tired. And hungry. Ah well, we all have those kind of days, haha.
DAY 8 • 29 March
This is a look of someone who was able to breathe a little, haha. Strangely, I was only able to check the photos yesterday when I had started writing this post. I would normally work on images I will be using for a blog post first before I start writing. So when I came across the Day 8 photo, I was pleasantly surprised because I really like this one. I had to think back to what happened that day. I guess I was pretty happy that I was able to sort out what issues I had the previous day such as getting the printer exchanged and I know I brought home a proper functioning one. Yay! And that the stuff I’ve been working on the past week is slowly coming together and getting me closer to finishing the prep stage.
That’s the thing with starting with new projects. It’s the early stages that can be a bit of a pain. I know I’m still in the early stages but I’ve managed to reach a few milestones. That’s prolly why I look pleasant in this photo, haha.
DAY 9 • 30 March
Before I forget, one other product that I can’t live without is the lip balm. If I have moisturisers for my face, I’d have to have lip balm for my lips. It’s already part of my daily skincare ritual (yes, I put on lip balm before I put on lipstick). Been using Hurraw Lip Balm and pretty happy with it actually. However, when I switched to Sunright Lip Balm SPF 15, I was happier.
You have to know that I had to go through a lot of lip balms before I got to Hurraw. Been using it for the last 4 years because it has what I was looking for. But when I started using Sunright, I was like — Wow. For a lip balm, this has staying power without the sticky feel. Not to mention, chapped lips is now a rare occurrence. So, out of the products that’s part of my new regimen, this one I fell in love with immediately.
DAY 10 • 31 March
Was on my way out to run a few errands. Now that I’m wee bit older (hehe) I find that I prefer wearing less makeup if I wear any at all. If not for the need to cover up a few signs of “wear and tear,” I’d go for just wearing moisturisers and sunscreen and lip balm — well, I normally do that if I’m just staying in. Anyway, I decided to just wear the Advanced Tinted Moisturiser with just a quick touch up on my eyebrows before heading out.
Side note: It’s funny how I would need to lightly dab my face with tissue to remove beads of sweat forming even when I have a fan pointed directly at me while I was taking the photo. Not just this one but most of the photo sessions, haha. I usually try to take photos in the afternoon, you see. Problem with that is the humidity and heat.
I’ve heard that most folks prefer this product in Honey (lighter shade) but I noticed that the Beige (darker than Honey) seems to work for my skintone even when I know I’m acidic. I guess most folks like their makeup to be shades lighter.
Anyway, I’ll try to talk more about the products that form the new regimen as we go along. So far, after 10 days, I haven’t quit using any so that must be a good sign but has my skin improved? I haven’t seen anything significant yet. Over-all well-being, tho, I’m noticing an increase in appetite and am getting better sleep (which is heaven!), which translates to more energy the next day. That’s a big plus in my book!
As for other results, I can only try to describe how things truly are as they happen, and, hopefully, with much authenticity. That’s how I usually am anyway (sometimes borderline tactless or to some heartless, haha).
For now, I’m having fun with my journey, documenting this whole thing — quite excited to be back blogging again. I’m really hoping I can keep this up. This being the whole blogging thing and not the extra loooong post like this one. I’ll break it down to more manageable posts next time. I actually think that even doing weekly would end up having long posts. Ah, well. Let’s see how it goes, shall we?
So how about you folks? How have you been? Doing anything new in your life lately?
